花は散るからこそ美しい／Flowers are beautiful because of fragility
散らすまいと努める文化と、散ることを受け入れる文化。
「美よ、永遠なれ」と、朽ちない花を求めるのが欧米流です。
一方、花は散るから美しいと考えるのが日本人。
散るからこそ、心待ちにしていた一瞬の開花がいとおしい。
そこには、古びていく過程にも美を見出し、
いずれは朽ちるという無常を受容する価値観があります。
５月にミラノで開催した『Ri-VIVERE』展。
作品に使った新聞が変色してしまうのではと心配され、
退色を防ぐにはどうしたらいいかと考えていました。
でも世阿弥の『風姿花伝』を読むうちに見方が変わりました。
新聞は、新聞のままでいいのかもしれない。
私たち日本人にとって、３．１１は忘れ得ぬ日です。
例え新聞が変色しても、それがあの日からの時の流れを示してくれるのだとしたら。
In the West, it is common to seek eternal beauty in flowers.
On the other hand we Japanese consider flowers are beautiful because they are fragile.
In long-awaited spring, we appreciate the cherry trees in full bloom in a short while.
And we find beauty even in process of the decay.
There is a sense of the evanescence that nothing is certain in our life.
In the exhibition“ Ri-VIVERE “ in Milan in May,
someone was afraid that newspaper might discolor in the future.
Then I have been thinking how to prevent discoloration.
But I have changed my idea in these days,
reading “ HushiKaden“ by Zeami.
The day March 11th is unforgettable for Japanese.
So I would not be afraid to accept discoloration
if it can show how long time has passed since the tragedy.
