いま、パーカッショニストのル カン 二ンさんがコンサートツアーでフランスから初来日しています。彼とは今春、パリのアーティストレジデンスでコラボレーションをしました。

今回の日本ツアーは、ミシェル ドネダさん（ソプラノサックス）、齋藤徹さん（コントラバス）を加えたトリオを中心に開催されています。

我々がよく耳にする音楽は、旋律と和音で構成されています。でも彼らの即興演奏では、音色が重要な意味を持っていることに気づきます。一般に西洋音楽における旋律や和音は、音相互の関係性を問題にします。一方、日本の伝統音楽では音そのものの質、つまり音色を重視します。そして音色の複雑な表現力を追求していくと、音は倍音を含んで雑音へと向かっていくことになります。
そして雑音の響きは、その場その時の環境に大きく左右されます。
彼らの演奏にはリズムがありません。「間」があるのです。リズムも「間」もふたつの音と音の間隔にかかわる問題ですが、そこには大きな違いがあります。リズムにおいては音と音の時間距離は一定で、等間隔を守ればこと足ります。しかし「間」の場合、間隔は絶えず変化します。直前の音のあと、次の音をいつ鳴らすかという瞬時の判断が演奏の効果に大きく左右します。
音色にしろ「間」にしろ、即興演奏でこそ本来の魅力が発揮されます。

Le Quan Ninh ( percussions ) has come to Japan from France to hold a concert. I collaborated with him in performance in Royaumont in Paris this spring.
He is holding the tour now in Japan with Michel Doneda ( soprano sax ) and Tetsu Saito ( contrabass ).
Generally speaking, music is consisted of melody and chord. But in their concert, a tone itself seems more important for their musical performance. In melody and chord in Western music, relation between a note and another note is an important issue. On the other hand, a tone itself, quality of sound, means a lot in Japanese traditional music. In their concert, I enjoyed a tone that is harmonic overtone, noise and vibration.
There are not rhythm but “ ma ” in their music. Both rhythm and “ ma ” is a matter related to distance between a note and another note, but not the same. In case of “ ma ”, when should a player make a note after the previous one makes a special implication in his music.
I am sure you can appreciate both “tone” and “ ma ” in their concert.
